Q1: Can you tell us about your journey into Kathak dance?
Guru Sonali Joglekar: I was born in Pune, India, also known as the cultural capital of India and passionate about I have had a passion for Kathak since childhood. Alongside my academic studies, and encouragement from my beloved Mother, I pursued Kathak seriously under the able guidance of my guru, the late Mrs. Pandita Sujata Natu, from the Jaipur Gharana. Over the years, I have performed extensively in India and Canada and have had the privileged to teach and inspire students here in Calgary since 2012.
Q2: What makes Kathak a unique and powerful dance form?
Sonali: Kathak is not just a dance; it is storytelling through movement, rhythm, and expressions. It combines intricate footwork with graceful gestures to narrate tales from Indian mythology and folklore. What makes Kathak special is its emotional depth and the connection it creates between the dancer and the audience. Every step and every spin (chakkar) tells a story.
Q3: How do you approach teaching Kathak at Lay-Tal Dance & Arts?
Sonali: I follow a structured curriculum based on the syllabus from University Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth in Pune, blending practical training combined with class room training to explain knowledge of theory behind Kathak. theoretical knowledge. I believe in maintaining the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara while adjusting to the needs of modern students in Calgary. Whether I am teaching children or adults, beginners or advanced learners, I emphasize discipline, creativity, and cultural understanding.
Q4: What opportunities do your students have to perform and grow?
Sonali: Our students perform regularly at Calgary’s cultural festivals, community events, and biennial dance concerts organized by Lay-Tal. We also encourage participation in Kathak competitions, that helps build confidence and stage presence. These experiences are vital for personal growth and deepening one’s connection to the dance.
