Class Details
Beginner Classes – Foundations of Kathak
- Who it’s for: Students of all ages who are new to Kathak
- What you’ll learn: Basic footwork (tatkar), Hand gestures (Hast-Mudra), Hand Movements (Hastak), spins (Chakras).
- Class duration: 45 minutes per session
- Focus: Building confidence, coordination, and understanding the foundations of rhythm and storytelling
Intermediate Classes – Expanding Skills & Expression
- Who it’s for: Students who have completed beginner levels or have prior dance experience
- What you’ll learn: Taal-based compositions, expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and more complex footwork
- Class duration: 1 hour per session
- Focus: Strengthening technical skills, enhancing musicality, and connecting emotion with movement
Advanced Training – Mastery & Performance
- Who it’s for: Dedicated learners aiming for performance readiness or diploma certification
- What you’ll learn:Advanced Trainingin various Taals such as Tritaal,Zaptaal, Ektaal and Rupak etc.Training in Abhinaya or Expressional aspects of Kathak.
- Class duration: 1.5 hours per session
- Focus: Perfecting technique, exploring creative expression, and preparing for concerts and competitions
One-on-One Classes – Personalized Attention
- Who it’s for: Students seeking individualized guidance
- What you’ll learn: Customized lessons tailored to your skill level, goals, and pace
- Class duration: 45 minutes per session
- Focus: Intensive skill development, detailed feedback, and faster progression
Online Classes – Flexible Learning from Home
Who it’s for: Students unable to attend in-person sessions
What you’ll learn: Structured curriculum delivered virtually, including demonstrations, practice sessions, and real-time corrections

Everything You Need to Know Before You Begin
Do I need any prior dance experience to join Kathak classes?
No experience is required! Our classes are open to complete beginners as well as advanced learners.
What age groups can join?
We welcome students from age 6 to adults of all ages. It’s never too early or too late to start Kathak.
Do you offer trial classes?
Yes, we offer a minimum 3-month trial package at a discounted fee so students can explore Kathak before committing long term.
Will I get performance opportunities?
Absolutely! Students regularly perform in cultural events, festivals, and our annual concerts in Calgary.
Do you provide certification?
Yes. Students follow a structured curriculum from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune, and many of our students have successfully completed diploma-level exams.
Other than the Fees, are there any other expenses that one should plan?
Everyone should plan for additional expenses such as for example, Registration, Ankle Bells (Ghungroos), Kathak Costume, Jewelry and Concert/Participation tickets etc.
Do you conduct workshops/trainings?
Yes. Lay-Tal Dance & Arts conducts Workshops and training sessions & does Choreography for dance lovers.
